Five Question Friday - On Pointless Pillows and Patchy Purple Polish

I'm participating in Five Question Friday today. It makes for a good post and honestly the kids have not destroyed anything or done anything insanely ridiculous in the last few days (which we all know makes good reading. and a tired, frustrated mom.)

Here's this week's questions:

1. Do you apologize to your kids?

2. What color are your nails right now?

3. When you were growing up, how difficult was it for you to stay home from school sick? (As in, did you have to vomit or just say "I don't feel good".)

4. When is the last time you bought a new comforter for your bed?

1. Do you apologize to your kids?

I certainly have. I probably say, "Momma's really sorry she just yelled like that at you" at least every few days. Then there's the eat-crow-and-want-to crawl-into-a-hole apology when I make a promise to one of my kids and then am unable to follow through on it. :( So not fun. But hey, every time they hurt each other with words or punches I make them apologize to each other. It's not going to be real to them if they don't see it in Momma too!

2. What color are your nails right now?

Purple (like grape jelly). I painted them on Monday and already it has completely vanished off the index fingers of both hands. Sigh - between cheap polish and housework - they didn't stand a chance!

3. When you were growing up, how difficult was it for you to stay home from school sick? (As in, did you have to vomit or just say "I don't feel good".)

I was one of those weird nerdy kids that absolutely HATED missing school and would do everything in my power to make sure I got to school each day. If that meant hiding a fever or a persistent cough, I did! With my siblings, however, they had to definitely "prove" illness in order to get out of school. If we had a bad cold, tissues and cough drops were put in the backpacks, and we were sent off to school.

4. When is the last time you bought a new comforter for your bed?

At least three or four years - I really have no idea. If hubby had his way, there would be no comforter at all. The comforter gets too hot and heavy to sleep under; so its purpose is really just to make the bed look nice during the day. At night, we immediately take it down and put a lighter blanket in its place. I sometimes wonder - what's the point?, but it really is pretty. Besides, without the comforter and all those pointless pillows, I wouldn't have something to occupy ten minutes of each morning and evening.

Froggy Feature Friday #2

It's time again for a little show and tell from the creative lily pad! My art desk in the corner of the living room is covered with custom projects in progress for the Christmas season. Last week, I posted some pictures of vintage ring bearer and flower girl frames for wedding attendant gifts. This week has to do with a wedding also.

The wedding is going to be a simple nature theme - the ring bearer will be carrying a pillow made of moss, the invitations show the bride and groom's initials "carved into a tree", etc. The groom-to-be loves trains; so she wanted to showcase that with a custom name train painted to match the wedding's theme. I have never done a train for a wedding before; it was a challenge to make it simple and sophisticated at the same time.

I decided to go with patterns from nature for each train piece - the veins of a leaf, wood grain, ferns, pine cones, moss, river rocks, and a dandelion blowing in the breeze.

The edges of each train piece were painted in a creamy vanilla with scattered green leaves, and the wheels were painted to look like cut tree stumps.

Overall, I love the way it turned out. The bride-to-be hopes that someday they will have a little boy to play with the train. :)

Friday Funnies

Just to let everyone know, we have a genius in the house. The Drama Queen is learning much more at school faster than I ever anticipated, and it's so fun to listen to her tell me all about what she learned each day (well, that, and who was naughty and got their name on the board).

Okay, she may not be a genius, but she is super smart (gets that from her momma, naturally). The other day we were driving to church, and I mentioned to the Nerd that she had been learning about opposites in school.

"Really? Let's see how much you know." he challenged her. "What's the opposite of cold?"

"Hot!"

"Okay, what's the opposite of happy?"

"Sad. Too easy, Daddy!"

"Well, what's the opposite of down?"

(big sigh) "Up."

(trying to be tricky) "What's the opposite of below?"

(no hesitation) " Be high!"

Yep, that's my girl! Have a wonderful Friday everyone!

Happy Friday all! Hubby is off work today so this will be quick.

We have a fun day planned with the kids before we send them off to their grandparents for the night. Then my Nerd and I will get our date night (at a Kutless: It is Well concert tonight!) before he heads out to a Linux conference for the rest of the weekend. Sigh. I feel like I have been a single mom this week, with him working late every night and then being away all weekend.

But today will be good. :)

A Blank Marks the Spot

Happy Friday! The kiddies are busy watching Toy Story 2, drinking chocolate milk, and eating cookies; and it's time for me to have a little fun with some fill-in-the-blank posting. You can join in the fun at The Little Things We Do...

1. The best piece of advice I was ever given was when in doubt, go to God. He never fails to give an answer! .

2. If I had a million dollars to give to one charity I would give it to my church. :)

3. If I got to choose my "last meal" it would be salad, my mom's lasagna, and Tillamook Udderly Chocolate ice cream for dessert.

4. My hair is Kool-Aid red right now and very short and wild. It never obeys, so I just go with it!

5. If at first you don't succeed google it, go to Starbucks for some motivation, and try again! :)

6. I have always been very gabby. I have a very hard time shutting up! Poor hubby will be asleep at night and I'll still be talking to him about random stuff...

7. Oh....and by the way.... did you know that the Beast is turning THREE in a little over a week! Look out world!

A Girl Walks into a Blank

Time to fill in the blanks again! Lauren of course has come up with some wonderfully interesting statements, and as usual, hang on to your seat as you catch yet another glimpse into my wildly exciting life. (Excuse me a moment. The Spud just put his cereal bowl on his head, and Crunch Berries and milk are cascading down his face...)

1. Today I am wearing an OLD Old Navy T-shirt, an ancient denim skirt that I have had forever, and fuzzy green/purple slipper socks. It is going to be a day of painting for me... .

2. My favorite childhood food was ketchup and macaroni (my mom called it "poor man's spaghetti") and my favorite food now is sushi or lasagna or pizza or pad thai or a really yummy burger from Red Robin. Okay, so I have a hard time choosing....

3. A day that I am too busy to read a book with my kiddies or laugh hysterically at the Drama Queen's latest knock-knock joke is a day that I am too busy.

4. The last movie I saw was "The Blind Side" (in theaters anyway) and the next movie I want to see is "Toy Story Three." How sad is that? I guess the mom haircut is not far off now... .

5. My favorite smell is coffee, especially when you first walk into the coffee/tea/baking aisle at the grocery store because, it speaks of a great caffeine rush to come, the incredible comfort of holding a steaming mug of goodness in your hands, and the promise of a new day, new things...

6. A weird little quirk I have is to look at license plates and billboards and rearrange the letters in my head to make new words. The word puzzle part of my brain never sleeps. Poor hubby! he has to listen to things like "Hey! Did you know that diaper spelled backwards is repaid?" .

7. When I take personality quizzes they always say I'm the female version of Dr. Phil, and that I should take over the world. For now, I shall conquer this cup of coffee and the breakfast dishes...

And on to painting! I have five lovebird paintings to complete today as well as a baby shower cake. :) Happy Friday everyone!

A Blank Look

It's time to fill in the blanks! Well, time for ME to fill in the blanks - all you have to do is read what I put in the blanks. And then of course, if you feel you have better answers than me, you can fill in your own blanks. Ha!

1. The best day ever was that Christmas eve when NerdBoy and I talked for 4 hours and realized that we were no longer "just friends." I still remember sitting close on the couch, clutching a pillow, and talking about our future together .

2. My favorite meal of the day is fourth meal because around 9:00 pm I get unexplicably hungry and greatly desire a 7-layer-burrito, a chocolate milk shake, or a fat juicy cheeseburger. Thanks Taco Bell for the fourth meal concept!

3. This weekend will involve more foraging into cardboard boxes to discover all the STUFF we own and never knew we had until we moved .

4. Never in my life have I driven a stick-shift. Nerd Boy insists I should learn "just in case" but I am not interested in something that requires that much attention. haha, I am too ADD to drive a stick-shift... .

5. The only thing better than coffee is ??? Uh Oh, I can't think of anything better than coffee. Sad day indeed for this caffeine addict .

6. I could really do with some more coffee. And a donut sounds yummy, Lauren! Let's meet up at Voodoo - I love their voodoo doll donut the best!

7. The most recent thing I bought myself was some blue/brown damask fabric to make little curtain panels for the windows in our new entryway.

Obviously I have had little time for blogging lately. I am hoping that things settle down soon so that I can get all these posts swirling around in my head put up.

Until then, I'll do a quick and easy post by joining in on the Fill in the Blank Friday fun at The Little Things We Do.

1. If I could medal in an olympic event it would be "can get three loads of laundry done while painting a custom order and making sure the kids don't kill each other" .

2. If I was stranded on a deserted island I'd take a large stash of candy & my hubby to do do all the heavy-lifting, shelter-building stuff.

3. Haunted houses are my most irrational fear.

4. I'd rather scrub toilets everyday, than deal with incompetent employees everyday.

5. I am incredibly tired, exhausted, and have too much to do .

6. I should really be packing up some orders to be shipped out, then working on favors for the party this weekend, then cleaning, then packing to move... .

7. One of my favorite things in all the world is a cup of hot chai tea, an interesting magazine, and a very comfortable recliner at the end of the day .
