There's More Than One Way to...

Sometimes you don't have paintbrushes lying around your house. Or, more accurately in my house, you know they are there somewhere but don't want to venture into the scary abyss otherwise known as "the garage" to find them. Or, also true in my house, you don't want the kidlets touching your precious paintbrushes because you know they are going to smash them into the paper and bend the bristles ridiculously.
Still, you can allow your kids to paint with a variety of other methods. There is of course the fingerpainting, which really is a misnomer as most kids use their entire hand, elbow, feet, and other assorted body parts to "paint." Check in your bathroom cabinets for painting materials (not make-up brushes!) such as q-tips and cotton balls. These are particularly fabulous for decorating newspaper advertisements and articles (and also helps cut down on paper waste - that stuff ain't cheap!)
We visited the kitchen and the play room for our painting materials. First we experimented with drinking straws.

Basically you put a few small puddles of slightly-watered-down paint on your paper and blow on it with your straw. Different straw angles produce different results. For those with limited lung capacity, such as our Spud, cut the straw down to a smaller and much more manageable size. Amazingly, when we tried this, no child of mine attempted to drink the paint up the straw. When you are satisfied with your swirly puddle of color, take another sheet of white paper and carefully place it on top of your paint puddle. Press it down without sliding it around. Carefully lift it back up, and presto!

You will have a beautiful marble effect on both sheets of paper that mirror each other, much like an ink blot test. Lay these out to dry. Once completely dry, they can be cut into a variety of shapes - we made butterflies with ours.

We raided the playroom for some Hot Wheels for our next painting project. Again, just put some small puddles of different colored paint on your paper, and then drive your cars through the paint in circles, figure eights, hearts, swirls, whatever your heart desires. Don't let the kids get too carried away or you'll be left with a brownish swirly design - not pretty.

Don't worry about the cars; when you finish, you can just rinse the wheels with hot water and the paint will come right off.

And that's it! Perfect for a rainy/snowy/the-silly-weather-can't-make-up-its-mind day.

What's that? You don't have paint either? Well, here's just a few recipes for making your own:
Egg Paint - Mix one egg yolk with a little water to get a paint consistency. Add a few pinches of Kool-Aid and stir until you get the color you want.
Jello Paint - Mix one TBS Jell-O powder and 3 TBS boiling water and let cool for about thirty minutes. Use before the gelatin sets.
Ketchup and Mustard - Just use as is!
Milk Paint - Mix 1 1/2 cups nonfat dry milk and 1/2 cup water. Add food coloring to the desired shade. If too thin, add more dry milk; if too thick, add more water.

Happy Mess-Making!

Art Project #3 - Pointillism Apples in a Bushel

Project Title: Pointillism Apples
Materials Needed: white paper, school glue, glue stick, craft paint, q-tips, sticks/twigs, leaves, brown crayon, scissors
Purpose: To teach students about the art form of pointillism. Also is helpful in cutting and gluing practice.
First, gather all of your materials. For the bushel basket, I printed off this image here and cut it out as shown (minus the apples). For the apples, I printed off this image here and traced it six times on a sheet of white paper. The kids helped me gather small leaves and twigs for the project.
Next, set up the painting station. I used a divided plate for our three colors - red, green, and yellow, and gave each child three q-tips. I should mention that although it is not pictured, I did end up setting everything out on newspaper to protect the table! :) (If you have older kids, you can teach them how to mix red with various amounts of white to make different shades of red for their apples, and so on.)
Demonstrate how to dip the Q-tip into the paint and then make a dot in the apple shape without dragging it around like a paint brush. Have your child fill up the apple shape with as many dots as they can without blending them together. Your child may wish to do two or even three colors on their apple to make it more realistic looking. Explain that pointillism is painting with tiny dots so that they become blended in the viewer's eye. You can even demonstrate that putting a bunch of blue and yellow dots close to each other will make it appear green from a distance.
Once your child finishes painting her apples (or gets tired of it!), set them aside to dry. Have your child glue the bushel basket to the bottom of a blank sheet of white paper and then color it brown.
Next, use the school glue to make thin lines on the bushel basket and attach the twigs. Break the twigs to a smaller size if necessary. Remind your child that this glue does not dry instantly; thus they must be careful not to bump the previously placed twigs on their basket.
When all glue and paint has dried, give your child a safe pair of scissors and instruct them to cut out their apples. This is good practice for following a curved line with scissors. Help them if they get frustrated.
Use the glue stick to glue the apples wherever the child chooses in the bushel basket.
Finally, squeeze large dots of school glue to the top of each apple and gently set the stem of each leaf in the glue dot. Set the whole project in a place where it will not be disturbed until the glue has dried.

My daughter chose to write "A is for Apple" on her project, and we hung all three projects up as pretty fall decor when they finished.

I say "A is for Adorable"! :)

Found It Friday - Water

I cannot believe that it is Friday already! I must confess, I had to do some scrambling to get my Found It Friday post ready, as puppeteering and painting have taken up most of my week.
For those new to Found It Friday, I'd love for you to come in and join in on the fun! Read here on how to get involved and please link up up your Found It Friday post below. (And really, please please please link up! I would like to really get this meme going!)

Our theme for inspiration this week is water, so here goes:
1. Since it's summertime, I thought I would include something showing water in its solid form. You can get ice cube trays in just about any shape. I think this Tetris ice cube tray is genius and would be a perfect party conversation starter! (ice cube tray by ThinkGeek)
2. Even something as simple as water can inspire fantastic works of art. I was captivated by this pixelated street art piece and had to share it! (artwork from WebEcoist)

3. Apparently you can also make art with nothing but water and a smooth surface. Somebody with much more talent and a much steadier hand made these ultra-cute water pictures. (simple water art by dunn of my interesting files)
4. Nutrition experts say we should drink at least eight glasses of water a day. But let's face it - water is boring and not nearly as fun to drink as soda or iced tea! Flavored water can help, but it can get expensive too. I found an interesting article on how to make your own flavored water, even using chocolate syrup, jell-o mix, or coffee flavor syrups. (full article by Kristie Leong at Lifestyle)

5. Just had to include one of my favorite activities with the kiddos. Give them some old paint brushes, a few buckets of water, and let them "paint" away outside. My kiddos have painted sidewalks, driveways, railings, tires, and more with this extremely inexpensive activity. It dries, and then they start all over! I couldn't find a pic of my kiddos painting with water, so I (ahem!) borrowed this one from QuatroMama to illustrate my point. (check out her blog, folks, it's inspiring and a great read!)
So link up folks with your water-themed posts!

and next week's theme will be: stars.

Thanks for participating!

A Girl Walks into a Blank

Time to fill in the blanks again! Lauren of course has come up with some wonderfully interesting statements, and as usual, hang on to your seat as you catch yet another glimpse into my wildly exciting life. (Excuse me a moment. The Spud just put his cereal bowl on his head, and Crunch Berries and milk are cascading down his face...)

1. Today I am wearing an OLD Old Navy T-shirt, an ancient denim skirt that I have had forever, and fuzzy green/purple slipper socks. It is going to be a day of painting for me... .

2. My favorite childhood food was ketchup and macaroni (my mom called it "poor man's spaghetti") and my favorite food now is sushi or lasagna or pizza or pad thai or a really yummy burger from Red Robin. Okay, so I have a hard time choosing....

3. A day that I am too busy to read a book with my kiddies or laugh hysterically at the Drama Queen's latest knock-knock joke is a day that I am too busy.

4. The last movie I saw was "The Blind Side" (in theaters anyway) and the next movie I want to see is "Toy Story Three." How sad is that? I guess the mom haircut is not far off now... .

5. My favorite smell is coffee, especially when you first walk into the coffee/tea/baking aisle at the grocery store because, it speaks of a great caffeine rush to come, the incredible comfort of holding a steaming mug of goodness in your hands, and the promise of a new day, new things...

6. A weird little quirk I have is to look at license plates and billboards and rearrange the letters in my head to make new words. The word puzzle part of my brain never sleeps. Poor hubby! he has to listen to things like "Hey! Did you know that diaper spelled backwards is repaid?" .

7. When I take personality quizzes they always say I'm the female version of Dr. Phil, and that I should take over the world. For now, I shall conquer this cup of coffee and the breakfast dishes...

And on to painting! I have five lovebird paintings to complete today as well as a baby shower cake. :) Happy Friday everyone!

In Case You Were Wondering...

In yesterday's post, I mentioned a very sad little incident in which the Beast decided to decorate one of my paintings with black permanent marker.  And in case you were wondering the outcome, I was able to save the painting by using one of the greatest inventions in the world - baby wipes!  I scrubbed until all the black (and much of the paint) came off and then redid that portion of the painting.  And here are the three paintings, ready to be shipped:

They turned out great, and I personally love the color scheme of this little girl's room!  The damaged painting was actually the owl one (of course, the one with the most background detail!)  This is probably the most fun project I've done in a while for The Framed Frog.

And speaking of fun projects, head on over to The Scrappy Frog to learn how to make this super easy dry erase board and some other ones as well!

Spending Time with My Little Sweetie

On Friday, I had the rare opportunity to spend some quality time with this little munchkin: (who is proudly wearing her new dress from Grammy to show her - thanks Grammy and Pop!)
Chris was out of town at a computer programming conference, and I took the boys to the grandparents' to spend the night.  That left Gabi and me to go and do whatever we pleased.  She really wanted to go see a movie, but as usual, there weren't even any remotely appropriate movies in the theater for a little girl.  (love those websites that tell the parents all the potty humor and other ridiculous stuff that are in "kids' movies" so you don't have to watch it to find out).
Her second choice was to go to the mall, as any dear daughter of mine would. :)  It was the strangest thing to walk into the mall without 1) a stroller, 2) a diaper bag, and 3) sippy cups and bottles.  I found myself strangely enjoying the shopping experience, actually stopping to casually look at items and not rushing to get out of there.  At the mall, we experienced the following:
1) a glimpse of the Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile, parked near our van
2) soft pretzel sticks with ooey gooey melty cheese
3) building a Lego tower as high as possible while politely telling the Lego store man that we weren't interested in buying anything
4) buying a set of sunglasses and matching flip-flops at the Disney store for $6  because Gabi "needed" sunglasses
5) stopping at Starbucks where the barista kindly put Gabi's chocolate milk in a grown-up cup so she could carry a coffee cup like Mommy
6) playing madly at the indoor play area and meeting a new friend, Ally, who followed Gabi around like a puppy.

We then considered our options.  Go home and go to bed, or go rent a movie and watch it in the comfort of our pj's?  Naturally we opted for the second one and rented "Madagascar 2" and bought chocolate chip cookie dough to make cookies.  The cookies were delicious, the pj's were oh-so-comfy, but I am disappointed to report that the movie was ridiculous, boring, and had too much body humor and subtle messages for my liking.  We didn't even finish it.

It was a blast however and I felt so refreshed having only one kid to deal with for a little while.  :)

In other news, these LIttle Sweeties just made their appearance in my Etsy shop today:

Not Me! Monday #4 - of Tv and Haircuts

Ahh, it's time once again to breathe a therapeutic sigh of relief as I carefully do not admit to any of the goings-on of the past week. As always, you can see what other folks are not doing at MckMamma's blog here!

I did not allow my kiddies to spend more than the usual hour watching TV last week. I did not plop them in front of the entertaining box for several episodes of colorful preschool goodness. And obviously, I would never have subjected my six-month-old to such mind-numbing activity. Nope, not me. Why would I need that extra time to get stuff done? And don't you know that when you're busy working around the house, the children will just play quietly at your feet? No need for edutainment here!
(excuse me for just a moment while I laugh and laugh and laugh about the "playing quietly at your feet" comment! Whew! Ok, ready to move on...)

This past weekend I did not cut off my daughter's beautiful golden hair. I did not yield to her pleas to have short hair please Mommy even though I thought it looked better longer. I did not have dreams of no longer having hair battles in the morning. And of course I did not think she looked as cute as a button when the whole process was . . .er, not finished. And absolutely I did not sit her in front of that entertainment box again while I was doing it. Oh no, not me!

This mommy did not dress her boys in matching clothes for church yesterday. She did not do so, hoping that they would not develop a complex from their mommy who seems to have a need for matching their clothes. She also did not make them sit and smile endlessly in various poses, only to choose a photo in which Michael was staring wide-eyed at the camera. Oh no, not her! She certainly didn't use any bribes containing sugar for the photo shoot or lecture number one son about the pitfalls of dripping his yogurt down his new shirt. (don't look, people, the photos were taken before the yogurt dripping episode).
And finally, I did not spend an entire day creating fabulous kitty paintings in which each cat wore sunglasses. Oh my, that would have been a frivolous use of my time and not beneficial to the poor neglected children either! I did not then post them in my etsy shop and then shamelessly use this post to promote The Framed Frog's newest items. Nor did I dance a jig and scream excitedly just because I made my first sale this past weekend...

So what have you been not doing this past week? Don't be afraid to (not) admit it - it's good for the soul! :)
