Blue Ombre Baby Shower Cake - The Natural Way

If you've been around for a while, you know that I like to decorate cakes and do so rather frequently.  A few weeks ago, I was asked to make a baby shower cake, a request that I gladly accepted.

A few hours later, I was perusing the internet (and my Pinterest boards) to be inspired for a perfect baby shower cake design. I found this pretty design here.  I am loving the ombre look that seems to be so popular these days and thought it would make a perfect modern shower cake.  I gathered the supplies to make my "sugar cookie cake" (so named because it tastes like a giant sugar cookie), and then it hit me.

Oh yeah.  We don't do that artificial food color thing any more.  How was I going to do many shades of blue naturally?  Apparently, boiled cabbage can sometimes produce a grayish-blue color.  Still, I had never done it before, and I definitely did not want to show up to the shower with frosting that tasted like cooked cabbage.  My friends on the Feingold member boards told me about a set of all-natural icing colors that are made by India Tree.  I dumped the kids off at Grandma's and went to Whole Foods.  After I recovered from sticker shock ($18 for three little bottles of red, blue, and yellow!), I ponied up the cash, figuring I could use them for future birthday cakes and other celebrations.

And as you can see from the photo, the color turned out exactly as I had envisioned it.  The gals at the shower loved it, and my inner-happy-cake-decorator-self was thrilled that I still had options when it came to making pretty cakes.  (I totally want to try this ombre petal method with all shades of chocolate frosting!)

Want my sugar cookie cake recipe?  Here it is - it's a little more work than the average cake but completely worth it, I promise.  It tastes fantastic and holds up well for tall or structured cakes.

Ingredients:
  • 4 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 TBS baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs (separated)
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Make it:
  • 1.  Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

    2.  In a large bowl, beat the butter until smooth. Add the sugar and beat until smooth. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition.
    3.  With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    4.  In another bowl, with a clean beater, beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Stir about 1/2 cup of whites into the batter to lighten it, then fold in the rest of the egg whites.
    5.  Divide the batter evenly between three 8" (or 9") round cake pans. Smooth the batter to make it level.
    6.  Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.  Be sure to check at the 25 minute mark as you definitely do not want these to overbake.  Tops of the cakes should be springy.
    7.  Cool the cakes in their pans on a rack for 10 minutes.Invert the cakes onto racks.  When completely cool, divide each cake into two layers.
    8.  Make your favorite frosting (buttercream is so yummy with this!) and stack the six layers, spreading frosting between and crumb-coating the entire cake.
    9.  Let the crumb-coat set up in the fridge for a half-hour or so.

Then go to Prudent Baby and follow the easy tutorial to make the Ombre Petal design on your cake.  To make your petals neater than mine, don't use Ziploc bags with the corners cut off.  Just sayin'.

    Celebrating the Little Things

We like to make a big deal about little things around here. Everyone gets to have two birthday celebrations each year - once on their birthday and once on their half-birthday. Yesterday was our chance to make the Drama Queen feel special on her 5 1/2 years of life.

First, we went to a local penny carnival . Armed with twenty pennies each, the kids were excited to try their hand at a variety of games.
We exchanged our pennies for tickets and had a blast exploring the carnival. Tossing beanbags, "fishing" for candy, doing a candy walk, tossing rings onto bottles, and more awaited our somewhat rowdy crew. The Beast shut down after just a few games, but he was content to watch the others play. The Spud had a very hard time staying with Momma and waiting his turn in line. The Drama Queen had a great time - especially since a sweet friend was able to join us for our day of fun. With the girls' hard work, they were able to earn enough tickets to score a big candy treat for each kid at the end. The Drama Queen was convinced that the penny carnival was being held just for her. :)
and of course, all birthday celebrations MUST have cake. It's practically the law. The Drama Queen has changed her favorite color to pink and specifically asked me to make a Hello Kitty cake for this occasion. Even the cake inside was bright pink with a rich chocolaty filling.

It may take a little extra effort to celebrate half-birthdays as well as regular birthdays, but I hope that these will be special memories for the kids in years to come. And while they are so little, it is nice for them not to have to wait a WHOLE year before they can have a birthday again. :) What can I say - I'm just a kid at heart! (and I love any and all excuses for more cake!)

    the Terror is Two!

A certain little boy turned two years old on August 14th, and since the Drama Queen and I would be away on our Canadian wilderness adventure during that time, we planned the Spud's birthday celebration the Saturday before we left.

The Spud is easy to please - give him some corn dogs and cake, and any gift with wheels will do.
He skillfully removed the fancy wrapping from his gift:

And folks, let me tell you, yes, that expression was accompanied by several shrieks of utter delight. Only two and he has his own car!
Who says birthdays have to cost a lot of money? This fun car was a Craigslist find :)
Grandma and Grandpa further fulfilled his wildest car dreams with Rumblin' Chuck and his friends.
Top it all off with a Little Einsteins rocket cake complete with Kool-aid cherry frosting sweet enough to put you in a sugar coma for a week! :)

I still can't believe my baby is two! I no longer have a baby in the church nursery (the first time in 4 1/2 years), and the Spud is already making strides in taking over the 2-3's class.

Seriously, the title of this post is only slightly a joke. The Spud's specialty is terror, whether it be destroying the house wall by wall or attacking his siblings with gusto. I am already envisioning the phone calls we are going to get from his teacher when he goes to school. "Michael is so smart, but..."

Ha, I love my little monster! He gives me the fiercest hugs and best kisses and is the greatest for making me laugh. Happy 2nd Birthday, Spud!

    Found It Friday - Daisies

It's time again for a breath of fresh inspiration. Welcome to Found It Friday, where I (and other awesome bloggers) share how we were inspired by the simple yet beautiful flower called a daisy. In case you're joining us for the first time, each week I post a theme for inspiration. All participating bloggers come up with five things inspired by the theme. You can read more about how you can join in on the fun with this new meme here.
He loves me, he loves me not. . . let's explore this field of daisies together.
    1. I love the cheerful effect that giant Gerber daisies have. I couldn't think of a more appropriate place for my daisies than my big sunny kitchen window. I bought adorable hourglass vases at IKEA, filled the bottoms with white rice, and then inserted the Gerber daisies (which I cut down to the height I wanted.) Instant happiness!
    2. Perhaps if you love flowers but have trouble keeping them alive (I have no green thumb whatsoever!), this steel daisy chain may work perfectly in your garden. It is made entirely out of recycled propane tanks by Shining Sun Garden Works. Gorgeous!
    3. The Drama Queen and I were so inspired by the shape of daisies that we made our own monogrammed daisy hair clippies. (tutorial)
    4. Daisies are just lovely at weddings! Here is a very chic and easy way to make your wedding favors memorable - just add a sweet daisy to the top of a standard wedding bubbles container. (daisy wedding ideas)
    5. And speaking of sweet, make edible daisies like these charming beauties to decorate cupcakes for your next garden party or bridal shower. (Puffed-Up Petal Cupcakes by Wilton)
And finally, as a little bonus this week, I made a daisy-inspired treasury at Etsy, highlighting items featuring fresh yellows and clean whites. It's easy (and addicting!) to make your own treasuries at Etsy.com. It's strangely exhilarating to organize a group of your favorite things and make it look beautiful. You can see my entire treasury here.

So, show me your daisy love! Link up with your Found It Friday daisy post below, and be sure to visit everyone else's posts to kick up the creativity this weekend!

Next week's inspiration is: Sand and Surf . Start gathering your wonderful finds now and wow us with a beautiful post next week!
